A FREE half day America’s Cup Experience for your students!

Go Sail is all about giving young people new experiences; with the involvement of local secondary schools, we will enable 2,000 young people from across the Solent area to not only try sailing but come to the home of a professional working sports team and experience our Tech Deck and Education Centre here at Land Rover BAR.

Developed specifically for key stages 3 and 4 of the National Curriculum, the Tech Deck gives young people a unique behind-the-scenes experience with hands-on interactive exhibits, enabling students to get close to the boats, people and technologies in development right here in Portsmouth.  Working with our Education manager you can discuss in advance with her what the lesson should focus on.

The sailing sessions will take place at Portsmouth Watersports Centre, or for Isle of Wight Schools at UKSA in Cowes in a range of dinghies with qualified RYA instructors showing students the ropes and nurturing their skills of problem solving, leadership and decision making.

How does it work?

The project runs from March 2017 until October 2017 and is split into two phases, with an initial Tech Deck visit followed by a Sailing taster session. 2000 14-16 year olds in Years 9,10 and 11 have this amazing opportunity during school term time which is followed up by a four day RYA Start Sailing course for 12% of participants in the half terms.  Working with local sailing clubs, we plan to introduce all sailors that complete the Start Sailing (phase 2) course to their local club to ensure they have the opportunity to continue the sport.

Phase 1

Portsmouth, Gosport, Havant & Fareham schools:
On the day of the visit, students will first come to our Tech Deck and Education Centre for a 90-minute visit to experience the interactives and have a STEM lesson delivered by our 1851 Trust Education Manager, a trained teacher.

You will then transfer (schools to provide) to Portsmouth Watersports Centre, which is approximately a 20-minute drive where the team will meet your students and take them out on the water to learn the basics of sailing and hopefully have some fun doing so! Full details of what is provided & what needs to be brought are on the joining instructions page.

IOW schools:
Due to the travel times and locations of the sailing, the experience will be split into two sessions.
Sailing sessions will take place at UKSA on the dates listed on the calendar between 1500-1730. To book sessions for your school please contact Andy Hooper. To book your trip to the Tech Deck please check availability on the Tech Deck calendar and contact [email protected] to book a session.

All phase one sessions are free, transport is not included to, between or from venues. Available dates can be seen on the Calendar page. If your school would like to take part contact Andy Hooper, Go Sail Project Manager to request the date/s you’d like to book and he will book you in. You will then liaise directly with Andy to confirm pupil names & numbers and he will provide any further details and relevant risk assessments.

Phase 2
Once the young people have had a great experience, we hope that the urge to come sailing again will be an opportunity not to be missed!  We have arranged a number of RYA Start Sailing courses throughout the school holidays, four days at a time, which are spread throughout to ensure maximum opportunity to get as many sailing regularly as possible.  The courses are £30 and will take place at the same two venues, Portsmouth Watersports and UKSA.  Bursaries are available for those on pupil premium.
